Oral Histories

Oral histories, told through the perspective of “witnesses to history,” offer a rich narrative of the past and create a vital connection to future generations. Long before the written word, history was shared from one generation to the next through storytelling, capturing firsthand accounts and memories of individuals, communities, and events. These oral histories provide a more nuanced understanding of our past by presenting diverse perspectives and contextualizing the social and civic issues of their time.

The Historic Cabarrus Association’s Oral History Project was initiated in recognition of the importance of preserving the voices of those who have shaped our community. We aim to intentionally record interviews with individuals who have played significant roles in our history, including former leaders, community activists, and residents who have witnessed pivotal moments in Cabarrus County. Our efforts also extend to capturing the experiences of local artisans and craftspeople whose work has contributed to the preservation of our heritage, as well as residents who can share their insights on the changes that have occurred in their neighborhoods over time. Through these oral histories, we strive to enrich our understanding of Cabarrus County’s legacy and ensure that these invaluable stories are passed down to future generations.
