Who We Are

Our Mission

Our Mission

The Historic Cabarrus Association exists to preserve, protect, and steward Cabarrus County’s historic places, resources, and stories for current and future generations.

Our Vision

Our Vision

The Historic Cabarrus Association will be recognized as the countywide authority and trusted steward for historic preservation, serving as a connector, advocate, and resource for preserving and elevating the full and inclusive history of Cabarrus County. HCA acts in the best interests of the entire county and strengthens preservation outcomes through leadership, collaboration, and credibility.

Our History

Initially founded in 1939 as a local history initiative, the Historic Cabarrus Association was officially incorporated in 1973 when passionate citizens banded together to save the historic 1876 Cabarrus County Courthouse from demolition. This effort laid the foundation for our ongoing commitment to preservation, education, and community engagement.

Over the decades, we have evolved to meet the needs of our growing community. In 2007, we expanded our mission through a merger with The Concord Museum, strengthening our role in protecting and interpreting Cabarrus County’s history. In 2017, we welcomed the Cabarrus Genealogy Society, further deepening our commitment to documenting and sharing the stories of those who have shaped our region.

Today, the Historic Cabarrus Association is focused on county-wide preservation, dynamic educational programs, and inclusive community outreach. We are actively working to establish a local history visitors’ center and continue to offer engaging events such as historic walking tours, speaker series, and workshops.

As we move forward, we honor our past while embracing a future where history remains vital to Cabarrus County’s cultural landscape.

Our Home

Our Historic Visitor’s Center is on Union Street in downtown Concord, North Carolina’s heart. The 1876 Cabarrus County Courthouse was designed by architect George S.H. Appleget and served as a judicial center for Cabarrus County for 100 years. This architectural treasure is a two-and-a-half-story brick building covered in stucco and merges Greek Revival, Italianate, and Second Empire styles that were popular then. The Cabarrus County Courthouse is considered one of North Carolina’s finest public buildings of the late 19th century, and its preservation by the Historic Cabarrus Association in the 1970s is one of our crowning achievements.
