The Swanee Theatre

The Swanee Theatre first opened its doors in 1939 and was one of four bustling movie theatres serving the local community and Cannon Mills employees. The theatre hosted unforgettable cinematic experiences and live performances from stars like Hank Snow and the Grand Ole Opry, making it a cornerstone of entertainment in mid-20th-century Kannapolis.

After closing its doors as a movie theatre in 1974, the building found new life over the decades as a welcome center, museum, and later as an administrative office for Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. Following several years of vacancy, the historic venue was carefully restored, preserving its heritage while welcoming a new chapter as a vibrant live music and event space.

Today, the Swanee Theatre is once again alive with sound and energy. Outfitted with state-of-the-art lighting, premium acoustics, and a full-service bar, it offers an exciting lineup of live concerts, comedy shows, and dance events in an intimate, welcoming setting. Weekly shag and line dancing nights celebrate local culture. At the same time, the space—operated in partnership with Kannapolis Parks and Recreation—is also available for private rentals, including receptions, meetings, and community gatherings.

The Swanee Theatre is a historic movie house in downtown Kannapolis, NC and now functions as a live music and events venue.
