The Avett Theater

The Avett Theater in Mt. Pleasant, North Carolina, represents both a revival of local history and a celebration of community creativity. Originally opened on February 6, 1948, as the Paula Theater, it was once hailed as one of the finest small-town cinemas in the state. The theater served as more than just a movie house—it was the heart of Main Street, complete with adjacent storefronts and a neighboring grill that made “dinner and a movie” a beloved tradition long before it became popular nationwide. Families gathered there under the marquee’s glow to share stories, music, and laughter.

After closing its doors in the mid-1950s, the building stood as a quiet reminder of Mt. Pleasant’s bustling past—until now. The historic property is being restored and reborn as The Avett Theater, a modern arts and entertainment venue designed to serve Cabarrus County, Stanly County, and the entire region. This transformation will establish the space as a hub for live music, community performances, and cultural events, honoring its legacy while creating a new future for creativity and connection.

The project holds special meaning thanks to a generous gift from the Avett family, whose deep roots in Mt. Pleasant date back to 1947. From Reverend Clegg and Martha Avett to their descendants—Jim, Susie, Bonnie, Scott, and Seth—this family’s story is interwoven with the community’s own. Scott and Seth Avett, founders of the Grammy-nominated folk-rock band The Avett Brothers, have brought national attention to their hometown through their artistry and authenticity.

By giving the project their name, the Avetts have elevated its mission and drawn new attention to Mt. Pleasant’s growing arts scene. The theater will stand as a living tribute to the family’s legacy, serving as a destination for artists, fans, and visitors from across North Carolina and beyond.

The restoration of the historic Paula Theater and its transformation into the Avett Theater is more than just a renovation—it’s the creation of a significant arts and entertainment hub for Mt. Pleasant, Cabarrus County, Stanly County, and the broader region.
