Rocky River Presbyterian Church
Rocky River Presbyterian Church stands among Cabarrus County’s three historic colonial churches, alongside Poplar Tent Presbyterian and St. John’s Lutheran, each of which is deeply connected to the area’s role in the American Revolution. Founded around 1751, Rocky River Presbyterian Church is one of the oldest and most historically significant congregations in North Carolina, deeply rooted in the early colonial and revolutionary spirit of Cabarrus County. Established by settlers migrating from Virginia, the church’s earliest members built their first log sanctuary along the banks of Rocky River around 1755.
In 1758, the congregation called Rev. Alexander Craighead as its first permanent pastor—an outspoken proponent of liberty whose fiery sermons and writings helped shape the revolutionary ideals later embodied in the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. Under his leadership, and that of his successor, Rev. Hezekiah James Balch, the church became a gathering place for political and spiritual independence.
From these beginnings, the church grew to become one of the largest Presbyterian congregations in the state by the mid-19th century. It also established Rocky River Academy in 1812, furthering its tradition of education and enlightenment. Over the centuries, the church evolved through four successive buildings: two early log structures (circa 1755 and 1776), a frame church built in 1807, and finally the current brick sanctuary, completed in the late 1850s and dedicated in 1861.
Today, Rocky River Presbyterian’s campus stands as both a place of worship and a living museum of the region’s history. The grounds feature a historic cemetery dating to 1814, a Session House built in 1839, and a Manse constructed in 1873—each preserving stories of faith, perseverance, and community that span nearly three centuries.
