Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church

Founded in 1751, Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church stands as one of Cabarrus County’s three historic colonial churches, alongside Rocky River Presbyterian and St. John’s Lutheran, each of which is deeply connected to the area’s role in the American Revolution. Located about seven miles west of Concord in a peaceful grove of poplar, oak, and elm trees, the church is both a spiritual landmark and a living testament to the endurance of faith, community, and independence.

The congregation’s earliest services were held under a large poplar tree before the construction of a simple tent that served as a temporary house of worship. According to local legend, when members debated what to name their meeting place, one tossed a handful of water against the tent’s canvas and exclaimed, “Poplar Tent!”—a name that has stood for nearly three centuries.

Poplar Tent’s founders were Scotch-Irish settlers, and the first elders included William Black, David Reese, and Charles Harris—men whose leadership helped shape both the church and early Cabarrus County. The church’s first pastor, Rev. Hezekiah James Balch, a graduate of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), was ordained in 1769 and played an influential role in the colony’s spiritual and civic life. Both he and Benjamin Patton, who signed the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, are among the many Patriot soldiers and early leaders buried in the church’s historic cemetery.

Today, the church’s picturesque colonial brick sanctuary, nestled amid rolling hills and trees, preserves the legacy of those early settlers. The Poplar Tent Cemetery, home to generations of founding families, is a resting place for individuals once prominent in both church and state—names like Alexander, Harris, Cannon, Rankin, and Ross etched into stone markers that trace the lineage of Cabarrus County itself.

Listed among the region’s most historically significant religious sites, Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church continues to embody its founders’ spirit—a congregation rooted in reverence, resilience, and revolutionary faith.
