Harvey Jeremiah Peeler House

The Harvey Jeremiah Peeler House, built in 1923 in downtown Kannapolis, North Carolina, stands as a striking reflection of the city’s early prosperity and architectural charm. Designed by architect Leonard O. Reading for Harvey Jeremiah Peeler, a respected school superintendent and businessman, the two-story brick residence combines elements of the Colonial Revival and American Craftsman styles. Its solid masonry construction, hipped roof, and inviting wraparound porch make it one of the most architecturally distinctive homes in the area.

Originally built as a family home, the Peeler House soon became a cornerstone of Kannapolis’s growing mill community. After Peeler’s death, the residence temporarily housed local teachers and workers before taking on an entirely new role as Lady’s Funeral Home from 1950 to 1968, serving the community during some of life’s most significant moments.

Following years of deterioration, the property was later restored and repurposed for modern use as professional offices and event space, preserving its architectural integrity while giving it renewed purpose. The home’s careful restoration pays tribute to its craftsmanship and history, earning it a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 for both its design significance and its contribution to the social and civic evolution of Kannapolis.

Today, the Harvey Jeremiah Peeler House stands not only as a beautifully preserved piece of architecture but as a living testament to the resilience, growth, and transformation of a community shaped by education, industry, and innovation.
