Gibson Mill

More than a century ago, the site we now know as Gibson Mill looked very different. Founded in 1899 by businessman R.E. Gibson, in partnership with industrialist James Cannon, the facility began as the Gibson Manufacturing Company. It later became Plant No. 6 within the Cannon Mills network.

Through the early and mid-1900s, Gibson Mill buzzed with activity, its 31,000 spindles weaving the fabrics that defined an era. Workers produced colorful yarns, gingham, madras, and other fine textiles before shifting to towel and sheet production from the 1930s through the 1980s. For decades, the mill stood as a symbol of Cabarrus County’s booming textile industry and the hardworking people who powered it.

When the mill finally ceased operations in 2003, it marked the end of one chapter but the beginning of another. Local entrepreneurs soon purchased the property and breathed new life into its historic walls, transforming it into a hub for retail, offices, and warehouse space.

Today, Gibson Mill hums again—this time with creativity, community, and a renewed sense of purpose. Its rebirth represents one of the region’s largest and most successful adaptive reuse projects, honoring the site’s industrial heritage while embracing innovation and sustainability.

What was once a manufacturing powerhouse has evolved into a dynamic, community-centered destination featuring a locally sourced food hall, craft breweries, unique retailers, and modern office spaces. The mill’s revival beautifully merges past and present—preserving its history while creating an inviting gathering place for today’s generations.
