73 & Main at the Historic Mount Pleasant Hosiery Mill
Located in the heart of downtown Mount Pleasant, 73 & Main occupies one of the town’s most notable historic structures — the former Mount Pleasant Hosiery Mill, a building that has been part of the community’s story for more than a century.
Originally built around 1912 as the Mercantile General Store, the site served as a central hub for trade and daily life in early Mount Pleasant. In the 1930s, the property was converted into the Mount Pleasant Hosiery Mill, which soon became one of the area’s most important employers. Generations of local families worked within its walls, producing socks and hosiery and sustaining the town’s economy until the mill’s closure in 2009.
After years of vacancy, the historic building underwent a major restoration beginning in the late 2010s. Many of the structure’s original details — including hardwood floors, window casings, and cabinetry — were meticulously restored, reflecting the craftsmanship of the early 20th century.
Reopened as 73 & Main and the Old Well Brewery, the site has been reborn as a vibrant destination for dining, craft beer, and community gatherings. With its blend of rustic charm and modern amenities, 73 & Main not only celebrates Mount Pleasant’s industrial heritage but also anchors its renewed downtown district. The project has earned regional recognition, including nominations for the American Planning Association’s “Great Places” contest, as a model of historic preservation and adaptive reuse.
